Breaking Generational Silos

As a member of Generation X, sandwiched between the baby boomers and the millennials, I've navigated my fair share of workplace dynamics. Today, I'm peeling back the curtain on breaking generational silos in the workplace. Imagine Gen Xers as the ultimate bridge-builders, equipped with a blend of traditional values and digital fluency. We're like the mixtape (if you’ve heard of those) of generations—eclectic, practical, and somehow managing to keep the tunes flowing smoothly even as the tech evolves. Let’s explore how we can harmonize the diverse beats of our multi-generational colleagues, transforming the Under Pressure moments into chart topping hits of innovation and collaboration.

Entering the workforce, I was armed with a typewriter's speed and a newfound curiosity for email. Our generation has danced on the edge of technological revolutions, adapting from fax machines to instant messaging without missing a beat. I feel as though this unique position has given us a bit of a chameleon skill set—able to appreciate the depth of face-to-face meetings (thanks to our baby boomer influences) while diving headfirst into the digital communication era alongside our millennial and Gen Z colleagues.

Come Together

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Gen Xer in today's workplace is our natural role as mediators. We understand the value of hard work and resilience we've seen from our predecessors while appreciating the fresh perspectives and flexibility that younger generations bring. By fostering dialogue and understanding between these diverse groups, we can create a more cohesive and dynamic work environment. It's about recognizing the strengths each generation offers and leveraging them to achieve common goals.

I spent two years leading a multigenerational team focused on developing a first of its kind model for the government. Our self proclaimed “curmudgeon” baby boomers wanted to tackle the problem head on, in their office behind closed doors, that would be preferably locked. The millennials on the team were eager to learn and experiment, and preferred working together, in the same room, whiteboard and talking through the challenge. The innovation needed to develop the model required everyone’s experience and knowledge. I worked with the team to find middle ground - allotting time for both quiet research and group collaboration. The result was getting the model completed on time and kicking off the path towards trust with stakeholders.

People are People

The real beauty of breaking down generational silos lies in the rich melting pot of ideas, perspectives, and experiences it creates. I've seen incredible innovation spring from teams that blend the wisdom of experience with the freshness of new perspectives. It's like having a secret sauce that propels projects to new heights. But it's not just about the work; it's about building a culture of respect, learning, and mentorship. Younger team members can teach older colleagues about the latest tech trends, social media, or even new slang (though I'm still trying to explain "yeet" to some folks). Conversely, more experienced colleagues offer insights into navigating workplace dynamics, strategic thinking, and, perhaps most importantly, the art of patience.

Don’t Stop Believin’

Navigating generational silos requires a continuous effort from all of us. It requires intentional actions, like creating mixed-age project teams, fostering mentorship programs that go both ways, and encouraging informal social interactions (because sometimes, the best ideas come from a chat over coffee). Leaders play a crucial role in this process, setting the tone for inclusivity, respect, and collaboration. But it's also on each of us to be curious, to be open to learning from others, regardless of their age.

So, as we look beyond the generational labels, let's invite the entire spectrum of talents and stories to the table. By dismantling these invisible barriers, we're not just enhancing our work environment; we're building a more dynamic and cohesive future.
